ROBLOX

ROBLOX

Roblox is a massive online gaming platform and creation system launched in 2006, often described as a “metaverse” or a “digital playground” that allows users to create, share, and play millions of user-generated 3D experiences. It is unique because it is not a single game, but a platform that enables, on average, over 85 million daily active users to interact socially.
Core Components of Roblox
  • Roblox Client: The app that allows users to browse and play games.
  • Roblox Studio: The game engine and development environment where creators build games, models, and assets using a simplified version of the coding language Lua.
  • The Marketplace: A virtual store where users can purchase avatar customization items (clothing, accessories, bodies) created by Roblox or other users.
  • The Avatar: The user’s customizable character that represents them across all different experiences on the platform.
The Economy and Robux
Roblox is free to play, but it features a virtual currency known as Robux.
  • Earning Robux: Players can buy Robux with real money, earn it by selling in-game items, or by making popular games that earn revenue.
  • Developer Exchange (DevEx): Successful creators can exchange their earned Robux into real-world money, creating a legitimate “creator economy”.
  • Monetization: Creators can monetize games through in-game purchases (passes, game passes, special perks).
Game Categories and Content

Roblox hosts a vast array of genres, from role-playing (RP) and survival to obstacle courses (known as “obbies”) and social simulations.

  • Popular Games: Examples include Brookhaven RPAdopt Me!Blox Fruits, and Murder Mystery 2.
  • Socialization: Many games are “social hangouts” where users interact in real-time.
  • Content Labels: To assist with moderation, games are labeled as minimal, mild, moderate, or restricted.
Safety and Content Moderation

With a predominantly young user base (approx. 40% under 13), safety is a critical concern, and the platform has over 3,000 moderators.

  • Parental Controls: Parents can set restrictions for chat, limit spending, or lock account settings with a PIN.
  • Safety Features: Automated chat filters, in-app reporting, and age-verified, friend-only, or private experiences are available.
  • Age-Restricted Games: In 2025, social hangouts with private spaces (bedrooms/bathrooms) were restricted to users aged 17+.
Technology and Access
Roblox is accessible across multiple platforms, including PC, Mac, smartphones (Android and iOS), tablets, Xbox One/Series X|S, PlayStation 4/5, and VR devices (Meta Quest). It has its own dedicated, native rendering engine developed in 2014 to support high performance on lower-end mobile hardware.
History
Founded in 2004 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel (who passed away in 2013), the platform was officially released in 2006. It has evolved from a simple physics sandbox called “Dynablocks” into a social hub with, at times, more than 85 million daily active users.
